College Football Week Thirteen

Unlucky week thirteen! Or as I like to call it the week that Florida hit rock bottom and the week before Rivalry Week. A lot of teams decided to either take this week off or as we like to call it, play a crappy opponent at home to sell tickets and rest starters while picking up a win. Others decided to take the week off in another way and get beaten on their way to division titles (I’m looking at you Oregon and UCLA)

Anyway, I wasn’t as hyped for this week since the next two weeks we’ll get to watch games that matter to the teams and players a lot more as we head to Rivalry Week!

With all apologies to Aaron Murray’s ACL… Let’s kick it off!

Games of the Week:

#17 Arizona State over #14 UCLA 38-33.
And out of seemingly nowhere, Arizona State has won the PAC-12 South. This game was pretty much a summary of UCLA’s season in that they just couldn’t quite put it all together. The Bruins were down 35-13 at half and came powering back in the third but just couldn’t overcome that first half deficit and ended up losing by five. Arizona State has to be feeling a sense of relief after seeing its offense fall asleep in the second half managing only 3 points and their special teams repeatedly getting gashed on punts and kicks.  ASU now really just has to regroup, stay healthy and beat Arizona next week before a meeting with Stanford in the PAC-12 Championship Game.

#20 Oklahoma over Kansas State 41-31
I really didn’t expect this game to be that close and when K-State took a 27-24 lead into the 4th quarter I thought they may have a chance at it. Unfortunately, OU scored 14 to open the 4th quarter and then held on to win it by 10. K-State really needed more than 24 rushing yards in the game and two interceptions killed a couple of drives. Oklahoma can be beaten and really hasn’t lived up to some of their expectations this year. But all will be forgotten in two weeks if they can get by Oklahoma State.

Honorable Mentions to:

Navy over San Jose State 58-52 in Triple OT

Duke over Wake Forest 28-21. A win for Duke Next week against North Carolina will give them 10 wins for the first time EVER!

Miss State’s 24-17 OT win over Arkansas. On the road, goes to OT, good win.

Boston College over Maryland 29-26. It wasn’t pretty, but it worked. Hail Mary!

Rivalry Watch!

#19 Wisconsin over #25 Minnesota 20-7
This year gave the Badgers 10 straight wins over the Gophers of Minnesota. Of course that means that Ol’ Paul Bunyan’s Axe once again resides in Wisconsin. Say what you want about the B1G, but I love these dumb little trophies they play for all the time. The Golden Gophers play in (and lose) a lot of trophy games every year and each time I just laugh a little inside; and a lot on the outside. Anyway, Wisconsin's defense held Minnesota's offense to just 185 total yards, and just 83 passing yards. That combined with Minnesota’s three turnovers led to a really long afternoon for the Gophers and a decade long losing streak against Wisconsin.

Upset of the Week:

Unranked Arizona over #5 Oregon 42-16
I couldn’t really decide whether to put this here or bring back the 'biggest loser' section for Oregon this week. Some of their players (DeAnthony Thomas) this past week were caught publicly saying that they didn’t want to play in the Rose Bowl because they had “been there won that.” Well guess what guys; now you don’t have to worry about ‘going there and playing that.’ I get that some of them want to go and win bigger championships and they want to motivate the team, but you’re the PAC-12. Every year you’re goal is to go and win the Rose Bowl. Now, after laying an egg in Tucson the Ducks go home needing to regroup. Too many mistakes in this game, turnovers, bad defense, and just a total lack of ability to even keep up with a much lesser opponent in Arizona.

#10 Oklahoma State over #4 Baylor 49-17
What’s this? I’m going to talk about Baylor? Well ok… Look Baylor was and is still a bunch of smoke and mirrors. They led the nation in points for because of wins against: Wofford, Buffalo, UL Monroe, W. Virginia, K-State, Iowa State, Kansas, a falling Texas Tech team and Oklahoma. Out of that list, pick one team other than Oklahoma that is a “threat” to any legitimate top 25 team. Anyone? No? That’s because Baylor feasted on a weak ass schedule this year and rode it to a 9-0 start. OK-State just gave them some competition and that was that. The result you see is a 49-17 blowout loss to send them to 9-1. Now I’m not saying that Baylor’s offense is not entertaining, but as a team they’ve been playing pretender all year long. Oh, and as long as OK-State wins the battle of the state of OK two weeks from now… hello Big-XII Championship!

Honorable Mention to Georgia Southern going to the Swamp and taking out Florida 26-20. I really loved this. I couldn’t look away. Geo. So. went 0-3 passing all day. Let me repeat: Zero pass completions on only Three attempts. They said, “Hey Florida! We’re going to run the ball now. It’s either going to be an option left, an option right, or an option up the middle. Nothing else! Oh, and we’re even going to miss two extra points. Ok, you ready?” And Florida couldn’t stop it. An even better stat is that Florida paid them $550,000 to come play this game. Classless as always, as the Geo. So. guys gathered to sing their alma mater, the Florida PA announcer cranked up the volume on the stadium speakers to overpower the team. They sang on! The Eagles sang on! Hahahaha. Fuck Florida.

Beat Down of the Week: (A.K.A. The weekly Florida State discussion)

#11 South Carolina over Costal Carolina 70-10!
Cock-a-doodle-do! Connor Shaw and company put up 70 over a (now) 10-2 Costal Carolina team from the Big South Conference. It got ugly quick with Carolina putting up 28 in the first quarter and then pulling starters in the second quarter taking a 42-7 lead into the half. Carolina just wanted to get out healthy as they look to take the state next week against Clemson at home in Columbia.

For you math majors out there Carolina won by 60, which means that technically #2 Florida State over Idaho 80-14 was actually a bigger beat down. And it was. But really, I didn’t want to have to break down the numbers on that game or even talk about FSU this week. Alas, this section of the blog has been turned into just that.

Honorable mention to North Carolina for putting up 80 points on Old Dominion in an 80-20 victory.

Pillow Fight of the Week:

UConn for the Win! The Huskies avoided a winless season by going on the road and taking out Temple 28-21. In true American Conference style, Temple took a 21-0 lead into half time as the philosophy frat boys got good and sauced in the stands then forgot about defense and gave up 14 points in both the third and fourth quarters to lose it by seven. Better to have sucked and lost than to have never sucked at all? Either way, UConn got the winning TD off a 59 yard pick 6 with under 5 minutes to go and now sit at a mighty 1-9 but with this have pushed my pillow fight predictions to 9-2 on the year.

Next week we’re going with two teams so bad they aren’t even in conferences: 1-10 Idaho at 1-10 New Mexico State. Idaho as you know just got blown out by FSU while New Mexico State just got blown out by Florida Atlantic (55-10). So really this comes down to statistics which lean slightly towards NMState. In the battle of the mascots I like Idaho Vandals over State Aggies. So really it’s a coin toss. I’ll take the Aggies at home to take out the Vandals of Sucking and move to 2-10 on the year.

Player of the Week:

Navy QB Keenan Reynolds. It was Friday Night Lights in Navy’s 58-52 3OT win over San Jose State, but Reynolds went off for 7 rushing TDs on 36 carries for 240 yards and one passing TD. (only 4/6 for 46 yards out of the option attack). Reynolds becomes the fourth quarterback in Navy history to run for more than 1,000 yards and pass for more than 1,000 yards in the same season. He also became the ninth quarterback in NCAA history to score at least 20 rushing touchdowns. He has 26 on the season, one shy of tying the NCAA mark.

My Picks Go…

8-2! So pretty damned good this week. I did miss on Baylor and Oregon State but correctly picked LSU and Arizona State. I’ve got two weeks to go but so far I’ve realized that I should have been betting about 10 bucks a week this year and I probably would have made some good cash. And at 9-2 on the year in my pillow fights I can say that I’ve kept pace with Duke.
